About our 2007 Honorees

Vital Link Award: Liz Claiborne Inc. has been involved in domestic violence awareness since 1991 and has supported prevention, victim services and workplace awareness through partnerships with domestic violence agencies, consumer education, and workplace education. Liz Claiborne Inc. is being honored for its cumulative contributions to this work and more recently for initiating and funding Loveisrespect.org, The National Teen Dating Abuse Helpline (1-866-331-9474 or 1-866-331-8453 TTY), which provides teens with access to resources and information 24 hours a day.

Domestic violence is not just a concern for women, but it is a serious issue for all of us. When we set out to measure the prevalence of dating abuse among teens, we had no idea just how staggering the results would be," says Jane Randel, Vice President, Corporate Communications, Liz Claiborne, Inc. "Our past three surveys have shown that an alarming number of teens are experiencing dating abuse and parents are largely unaware of the problem underscoring the need for a national teen dating abuse helpline. "

Media for Change Award: Under the leadership of Editor-in-Chief Stacy Morrison, Redbook Magazine has distinguished itself in providing responsible, compelling coverage of domestic violence in a way that educates and empowers people to seek solutions to domestic violence. In its October, 2006, article, “You can save a woman’s life just by asking her how she’s doing,” Redbook provides insight into recognizing the signs of intimate partner violence among friends, family and co-workers and what to do about it. “Our goal is to make people really connect with domestic violence in a way they can’t say ‘no’ to, and to give them the information, encouragement and even the language to take a step forward and do something to make change, whether for themselves, and individual they know or in their communities at large,” says Stacy. “The spark of empowerment Redbook has a role in igniting is tiny but powerful. We know that change is created in a million little steps.”

Voices for Change Award: Robin Givens made the courageous decision to tell her own personal story in her new book, Grace Will Lead Me Home.” Robin recounts her volatile marriage to Mike Tyson and also the legacy of life-threatening domestic violence that has haunted her family for three generations and how she has managed to survive, and, ultimately, thrive. Robin’s example is an inspiration for millions of survivors in America.
