Hotline Receives Generous Gift from Former Advocate

The National Domestic Violence Hotline (The Hotline) recently received a $5,000 gift from former Hotline Advocate, Celina Vasquez. Vasquez, who worked at the Hotline from 1996 to 2000 as a Bilingual Advocate, went on to work at the Women’s Shelter in Long Beach, California, and served as a Social Worker/Health Educator at Tarrant County, Texas.

She was selected as a 2008 Verizon Wireless Mobilizing Voices Campaign Honoree and as an award recipient was provided a $5,000 contribution which she could offer to a domestic violence agency of her choice. In announcing her gift to the Hotline, Vasquez said, “The time I spent as an NDVH Advocate was so extremely rewarding. I hope this gift will enable the Hotline to continue to provide lifesaving services to women and children across the country.” The Mobilizing Voices Campaign is a Verizon Wireless culturally relevant domestic violence prevention and awareness campaign targeted at working with Hispanic youth.

The Hotline recently announced several staff cut-backs which are attributable to the downturn in donations. Hotline Chief Executive Officer Sheryl Cates expressed her gratitude by stating, “With the decline of contributions to the Hotline, Celina’s gift comes at such an important time. As a former Advocate, she has first-hand knowledge of the daunting challenges faced by domestic violence abuse victims every single day.”
