When Media Reports Miss the Point – An Opportunity for Action

Should the news media be held accountable when they promote myths about family violence?  Much of Hollywood is talking about the alleged assault by the Batman star Christian Bale. The facts are still not clear about what really happened, but media reports are suggesting it should stay a private family matter.  Such suggestions promote keeping family violence in the dark and away from authorities.

Today ShowThe Today Show aired a video Wednesday July 23 titled “Batman star denies assault.”  The Today Show video appears to favor Bale’s denial and misses the seriousness of the accusation.  There is a lack of balance throughout the video.

Watch the video.  Ask yourself, did the Today Show represent the realities of family violence? What message is it sending to victims and survivors trying to find their voice? If you believe the Today Show missed an opportunity, please let them know on their official forum  or email them today!

Verbally Abusive Relationships – Domestic Violence 101

Domestic Violence can take many forms including verbal abuse. Not all verbally abusive relationships include physical violence, but it is not unusual for these types of relationships to eventually escalate.  In her book, The Verbally Abusive Relationship, Patricia Evans lists the characteristics of a verbally abusive relationship to include a pattern of:

·         Withholding intimacy;
·         Judging;
·         Trivializing a partner’s actions or feelings;
·         Name calling;
·         Accusing;
·         Mean comments disguised as jokes.

“When the partners of verbal abusers recognize the abuse and take the necessary steps to ensure that they are no longer subject to it,” Evans states, “They are already in the process of recovery.”

Great Actions & Good Ideas

The GFWC-Mt. Pleasant (MI) attended the Isabella County Day of Remembering in honor of local women slain by their partners. They were able to register many people from the event for Million Voices Campaign.
